Secret Texting Acronyms: An Essential Parent’s Guide
Now that we’ve explored the secret language of emoji’s - now it's time to go even deeper into the language gymnastics of our teens… and understand their text abbreviations and acronyms.
You probably know what LOL and BRB mean… or even IDK…
There is a whole another language out there. While I don’t advocate for snooping on your kids phone (unless they broke YOUR trust and/or your worried about them) - it’s handy to have a little bit of awareness about their secret abbreviated language so that you know when a MOS, DOS or GNOC text message comes through - something a bit dodge is going on (Mum/Dad Over Shoulder and Get Naked On Camera). Even numbers have meanings!! 99 - means parents are out of the house 👀…
Some are innocent and are a fun way for you to connect and communicate with your kids - plus speak their language. Others could have them going down a disaster rabbit hole and if you are seeing them regularly enough - perhaps it’s time to have a conversation with them.
Why is it important to learn about these? Well, because it creates a commonality between you and your kids and also understanding and learning the more PG ones can open up the chat to the ‘not so PG’ ones. It’s also having some understanding yourself so if you see something concerning on their desktop when they are gaming or even on their phones as a message - you can start a conversation with them about it. Sometimes THEY don’t even know what it means and you can help them through an issue or avoid an inappropriate chat early on.
